Cornelius Named SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Chattanooga women’s basketball player Abbey Cornelius was named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced today.
 
Cornelius carries a 3.97 grade point average in Exercise Science.
 
Last week she led the Mocs with 14.0 points, 9.7 rebounds and five blocked shots in UTC’s games against Cincinnati, North Alabama and UNC Asheville.
 
The Knoxville, Tenn., native scored in double digits in all three games and moved to third place all-time at Chattanooga with 113 career blocked shots.
 
She recorded a double-double in the Mocs win over UNC Asheville with 12 points and a season-high tying 16 rebounds. Against North Alabama, Cornelius had 18 points and tied her career-best with five blocked shots. On the week she was 12-of-12 from the free throw line making all six against Cincinnati and North Alabama.
 
The 6-2 center is ranked in 14 statistical categories in the NCAA. She is fifth for defensive rebounds and 18^th for overall rebounds. She is 35^th for free throws made and 14^th for minutes played. Cornelius is among the SoCon leaders for scoring (14.4), rebounding (9.5), blocked shots (1.3) and field goal percentage (.466), and free throw percentage (.828).
 
Chattanooga (2-11, 0-0 SoCon) will travel to Knoxville on Monday, Dec. 27, for a nonconference game against #7 Tennessee at 6:30 p.m. before traveling to Jacksonville, Ala., on Thursday, Dec. 30, for its nonconference finale against Jacksonville State at 6:15 p.m. ET.
